What is yoga?
Yoga is a personal journey, and what takes us to the mat, is what usually keeps us there. At some point in our lives, we would have come across the practise. That intentional breathing you do when you calm yourself down; those stretches after the gym; becoming a vegan; being kind to yourself and others; mindfulness; meditation; everything you do is yoga, because yoga is more than just a physical practise.
The art of yoga was perfected and practised in India thousands of years ago. In his book, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Patanjali provided the very essence of the philosophy and teachings of yoga, placing great emphasis on the eight limbs (Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi) of yoga. In his teachings, Patanjali explains that once the mind is properly restrained, then the soul can rest in its true state of consciousness.
“Yoga takes you into the present moment, the only place where life exists"
